Franklin District where we live has a robust
economy with one steel mill, a number of dairy farms and loads of horticultural
businesses (both in open fields and greenhouses). It used to be an independent
district with its own local council and one of the best councils in the country
at that (very businesslike and efficient). However, a couple of years ago the district
has been divided and a large chunk of it has been lumped in with Auckland City
amidst a great deal of locals’ discontent.
When we drive out of town centre, we normally
see green fields with stocks on them or rows and rows of vegetables growing in
the fields or rows and rows of green houses on both sides of the roads. The
rows of vegetables are very pleasing to the eyes and also to the knowledge that
a lot of vegetables we eat are grown locally.
